Ullrich Pietsch was born in 1952 in Leipzig. He received his Diploma as Crystallographer in 1978 at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Supervised by Prof. Dr. Konrad Unger he received his doctoral degree at the University of Leipzig in 1981. His habilitation was completed in 1988. During his Humboldt fellowship in the group of Prof. Dr. Peisl at the MLU Münich in 1991 and 1992, he became familiar with the use of synchrotron radiation. As Professor of Structure Analysis at the University of Potsdam in 1995, and later as Professor of Solid State Physics at the University of Siegen (since 2005), he has used synchrotron radiation for structure analysis of crystals under external perturbation and for the analysis of structure to property relations of nanomaterials.
